Richard J Walters

Richard James Walters, age 90, of Hackettstown NJ and formerly of Fairmount and Cranford NJ, passed away on December 13, 2022 at Hunterdon Medical Center in Raritan Twp NJ.


Dick was born on December 5, 1932 in Elizabeth NJ to Nathan Oliver and Ruth (Parker) Walters.


Dick was a graduate of Cranford High School, Class of ’50 and Trenton State College,

Class of “55, where he was a three-sport letterman (Baseball, Basketball and Football).

After graduating college Dick enlisted in the United States Marine Corps.

He was initially stationed in Quantico VA and completed tours of duty in the South Pacific and India.

After retiring from active duty in 1958, Dick continued his service with the Marine Corps Reserve and retired in 1985 after attaining the rank of Colonel. Throughout his life Dick epitomized the Marine Corps motto - “Semper Fi”.

After leaving active duty with the Marine Corps, Dick taught physical education and coached basketball at North Hunterdon Regional High School in Clinton NJ.  In 1960 Dick began his long and rewarding career with New York Telephone/AT&T in New York and Basking Ridge NJ.  Dick’s responsibilities included managing district sales, logistical operations and conference planning, which included being a member of the Walt Disney Company Conference Board of Directors.

Dick spent much of his life in Cranford NJ where he coached baseball at all levels and was an active member of the Cranford Booster Club. He also enjoyed playing golf worldwide and studying U.S. history.


His most beloved passion was spending time with his family - his loving wife Joan of 68 years, their children Glenn (Patti), Graig, Geoff and Stasia (Dave). He also leaves behind his four beloved grandchildren Chris (Susan), Tara, Ryan, Nathan (Katrina) and his great grandchild Oliver, who was born this year.


It is the family’s wishes that all services at this time remain private and under the direction of

Maguire-Scala Memorial Home, 124 High Street, Hackettstown NJ 07840. A memorial service will be announced at a future date.


In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Richard’s name to the American Heart Association,

American Kidney Foundation and Toys for Tots.
