Gregory A. Portway, 66, of Hackettstown, New Jersey passed away on October 2nd, 2025 at Hackettstown Medical Center with his loving family by his side. Gregory was born in Manhattan, NYC to Thomas and Ann Portway, and grew up in Ridgewood, New Jersey.
Gregory earned his Bachelor's Degree from Ramapo College. He was employed as a Paint Associate at Home Depot for the past 14 years. Prior to that he was employed at Rockaway Bedding as Inventory Manager until they closed. Gregory was a lifelong Pittsburgh Steelers fan, music lover, particularly to Jimmy Buffet, Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, and the Good Rats. He was an avid car, Nascar, Indy, and Formula 1 enthusiast for decades. He also volunteered as a course observer and safety worker for CART/INDY. Gregory was a true animal whisperer, always making friends with whatever animal he crossed paths with especially, cats and dogs. And when he had a couple minutes to himself, Gregory could be found in the kitchen devising up his own new culinary creations, and playing the role of Mr. Mom to his family. He will always be remembered for his wit, humor, and devotion to his family and friends. He will be greatly missed by all.
Gregory is survived by his loving wife, Marianne of 33 years, and cherished daughters, Shannon and Erica; his siblings Ann Cooney and Douglas Portway. Also surviving are his Mother-in-Law Maria, Brother and Sister-in-Law, Ralph and Sally, as well as 15 nieces and nephews.
Family and friends may pay their respects on Friday, October 10th, 2025 from 4-8 PM at the
Maguire Memorial Home, 124 High Street, Hackettstown, NJ 07840 and again on Saturday,
October 11, 2025 from 10-11 AM. Funeral service will immediately follow the visitation at 11 AM on Saturday in the funeral home. Burial will take place at Union Cemetery in Hackettstown.
