Eugene Dmytriw of Jefferson, New York (formerly of Washington, New Jersey, Warren County) passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 21 surrounded by his loving family after a brief illness. He was 92 years old. Born in Lviv, Ukraine, Eugene was the son of the late Joseph and Pauline Dmytriw. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Olga (Oranchak), with whom he celebrated 52 years of marriage, and his only brother, Roman, who resided in Ukraine. He is survived by his devoted family: son Martin, daughter-in-law Janice (Sawicki), and grandson Christopher; daughter Alyssa (Dmytriw) and son-in-law J.R. Amsbaugh; and many loving nieces and nephews. He was particularly fond of his niece Marilyn Zelinsky, who offered immeasurable assistance during the illness that eventually claimed the life of his cherished wife in 2012. Eugene was first and foremost a hard-working and loving family man whom his wife and children adored. He raised his family in central New Jersey, eventually moving north to a farmstead in Washington, New Jersey, that reminded him of his native Ukraine. Before retiring, he was a maintenance mechanic at Wakefern Food Corporation in Elizabeth, New Jersey. A devout Catholic, Eugene was an active member of St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church in Newark, New Jersey, until moving to northern New Jersey in the 1970s. He then joined the parish family of St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, Great Meadows, New Jersey, where he was a parishioner for nearly for 30 years. Eugene was a sweet and loving husband, father, grandfather, and uncle affectionately called "Gene," "Genu," "Daddy," "Grandpa," and "Pops." His hobbies included farming, gardening, jigsaw puzzles, and watching nature television shows. He loved all animals and they adored him-he was a natural Pied Piper. He also loved buffets and was particularly fond of orange marmalade among other sweets. A viewing will be held at Scala Memorial Home, 124 High Street, Hackettstown, New Jersey, on Sunday, September 25 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Funeral services on Monday, September 26 will begin at 9:00 a.m. at Scala Memorial Home, followed by 10:30 a.m. Mass at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, 335 Route 46, Great Meadows. Interment will follow at Pequest Union Cemetery, 8 Regina Lane, Great Meadows.
