Eleanor M. Keenoy, 88, of Allamuchy Township, NJ passed away peacefully at home with her family by her side on November 3, 2016. Eleanor was born on January 6, 1928 in Jersey City, NJ to the late Aloysius and Mathilda Bittig. She graduated from St. Elizabeth College with a Bachelor's degree in Biology. In 1951, she met and married the love of her life Charles.
When she was younger, Eleanor enjoyed playing tennis, ice skating (she could actually do some little jumps), and playing bridge and mah jong with friends. Eleanor loved to do needlework and tried her hand at ceramics. Prior to her illness, she and her husband volunteered at Meals on Wheels every week. She also gave her time to the church thrift shop. Eleanor loved to knit and with a group of friends, made caps for hospitalized babies.
Over the years, the family spent time living in NJ, NC, Cape Cod and VT. Eleanor loved Vermont more than any other place. She loved the mountains and the colors every fall. She loved to take long walks with her beloved Scotties. Her dogs were always model citizens and her family always wondered just how she knew how to make them that way.
But above everything else, Eleanor was a Mom, the perfect Mom. Because her husband traveled a lot for work, she almost single-handedly raised 7 children. She got them to school and all their sporting events. She made sure all the homework was done and the crazy school projects were turned in on time. She made sure that the family was a team who always loved and supported each other. She steered the ship.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 65 years, Charles Keenoy, her loving children, J. Kevin Keenoy and his wife Diane, Christine K. Michels and her husband Ron, Peter C. Keenoy and his wife Beth, Maureen K. Strickland, Kathleen K. Logerfo and her husband Michael, Richard M. Keenoy and his wife Sue, and Marianne Keenoy, 13 grandchildren, Kristin, Michael and his wife Kate, Maura, Kathleen, David, Matt, Andrew, Lauren, Alexandra, Tim, Brian, Cooper and William, 2 step-grandchildren, Tamara Cook and Kelly Perry and her wonderful caretaker, Akua. She is preceded in death by her precious son-in-law Jim Strickland and her brother 2nd Lt. USMCR John Bittig who lost his life in WWII. Friends and family may pay their respects on Monday, November 7, 2016 from 9:00 - 10:00 AM at the Church Of The Assumption Of The Blessed Virgin Mary, 302 High Street, Hackettstown, NJ 07840. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated immediately following the visitation at 10:00 AM with Father David J. Pekola officiating. Burial will take place at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Red Bank, NJ.
In Eleanor's memory, please be kind to others the way she always was. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Eleanor's name to the Latham Center, 1646 Route 6A, Brewster, MA 02631 www.lathamcenters.org
