Earl G. "Jake" Getchius

Earl G."Jake" Getchius, 89, a lifelong resident of Hackettstown, NJ passed away peacefully on April 2, 2021 at home with his loving family by his side. Earl was born on May 2, 1931 in Hackettstown, NJ to the late Earl and Hazel Getchius. Earl was a graduate of Hackettstown High School Class of 1949. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force. He married the love of his life Joyce Melillo. Together they spent 63 years of marriage prior to her passing in 2017. Earl was employed as Shipping and receiving supervisor for Holland Manufacturing retiring at the age of 70. He decided retirement was not for him and went back to work as a security guard until he retired for good at the age of 83. Earl was a member and past chief of the Hackettstown Fire Dept for over 60 years. He truly loved being a fireman and helping others. He was also a member of the American Legion. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
Earl is survived by his loving children, son, Robert Getchius, daughter Cindy Matthews and her husband Jeffrey and son Gregg Getchius. His cherished grandchildren, grandson Bryan and granddaughter Heather and a great-grandson Brycen. In addition to his parents and wife Joyce, his is preceded in death by his siblings, Hazel Wiles and William Getchius Family and friends may pay their respects on Wednesday April 7, 2021 from 5-8 PM and again on Thursday April 8, 2021 from 10-11 AM at the Maguire-Scala Memorial Home, 124 High Street, Hackettstown, NJ. Funeral services will immediately follow the morning visitation at 11:00 AM in the funeral home. Burial will take place at Pequest Union Cemetery in Great Meadows, NJ with Military Honors In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Hackettstown Fire Dept, 215 Stiger St, Hackettstown, NJ 07840 or the American Legion, ?P.O.
