Bryon Neale Johnston Sr., 77, of Hackettstown, NJ passed away peacefully at home on March 3, 2022. He was born on November 18, 1944 in Philadelphia, PA to the late Albert and Eleanor Johnston.
Bryon earned his Bachelor's degree in Engineering from Penn Morton College, now known as Widener University and Eddystone High School in Eddystone, Pa. After starting his career as an environmental engineer for the State of Pennsylvania, he worked for Nabisco for almost two decades as an engineering project manager. Later, he spent 18 years employed as a senior.project design engineer at AECOM, previously Metcalf and Eddy, until his retirement in 2012.
Bryon proudly served his country in the United States Army in Korea during the Vietnam War. He is a past member of the American Legion, and a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Hackettstown, NJ.
Scouting was a very big part of his life. As a youth, Bryon was both a Boy Scout and an Explorer. When his sons were of age, he served as Cub Master of Cub Scout Pack 164 and was a Unit Commissioner for Boy Scout Troup 158, Jeny Jump District, George Washington Council. Bryon's hobbies included gardening, photography, cooking and fishing. He enjoyed classical music and was a history buff. He was an avid fan of Penn State University, the Philadelphia Eagles and all other Philadelphia sports teams. He also was a dog lover.
Above all he loved his family and he treasured his grandchildren -- Aidan, Keith, Alex and Megan -- and spending time with them.
In addition to those cherished grandchildren, Bryon is survived by his devoted wife of 53 years, Jeanne Johnston, his loving sons, Bryon Jr. and his wife Karen, Scott and his wife Shannon, and Steven and his wife Robyn. He also leaves behind his brother Lawrence and his wife Helen, his sister-in-law Elaine, his close cousin Mary Ellen Ponzio and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert and Albert.
Family and friends may pay their respects on Wednesday evening, March 9, 2022 from 6-8 p.m. and again on Thursday morning, March 10, 2022 from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at Maguire-Scala Memorial Home, 124 High Street, Hackettstown, NJ 07840. Funeral service will immediately follow the visitation on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home. A reception also will be held offsite after the service with details to be provided.
