Adam David Nathanson, 51, passed away on December 2, 2025, in Reno Nevada. He was born in Grand Prairie, Texas, grew up in Long Valley, and was a graduate of West Morris Central Regional High School, He enjoyed running and was a member of the WMCRHS Cross Country Team.
Adam was an avid reader and library member. At the age of seven in 1981 he participated in the Junior Read-A-Thon sponsored by the Long Valley Junior Woman's Club to benefit the Washington Township Public Library and raised $100 by reading 38 books with fifteen sponsors, the largest sum of money for the library out of eleven participants. He also enjoyed skate boarding, so much so that when his parents permitted him to pack his own suitcase for the first time before a trip to California, they realized upon arrival at the hotel that Adam had snuck a skateboard onto the flight; he did get to enjoy using it for skateboarding on the boardwalk at Venice Beach.
Adam loved to help other people. He was a volunteer in disaster relief efforts in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. He later also earned an American Red Cross certification as a volunteer and was able to help in relief efforts in Houston after Hurricane Harvey.
With his love for the outdoors, he found his calling as an arborist and was especially skilled in climbing and pruning trees using gentle spur-less methods that protected the bark and the trees' overall health. He also participated in company tree climbing competitions and won awards for several of the activities there.
Adam loved nature and spent time in many National Parks; and he loved dogs, especially the stray he lovingly adopted. He also had a creative and artistic bent creating paintings and murals; in Reno, he worked at the Morris Burner Hostel, where many of the "themed" guest rooms were typically decorated with art, murals, and quirky creative touches.
Above all, Adam was a caring, nurturing, good hearted person who was much loved. He will be greatly missed.
Adam is survived by his loving parents, Jerry and Ginger Nathanson, by his Uncle Kenneth Nathanson and Aunt Ruth Nathan, and cousins Timothy Duncan, Steven Herskovitz, Seth Frank, Sari Frank, and Mia Maikowski, and several second cousins; he is preceded in death by his Aunts Sheila Duncan and Selma Herskovitz, and Uncles Sam Herskovitz and Charles Nathan, and cousin Lisa Sneirson.
Adam's Elogy
in the whisper of the trees
Adam's footsteps linger still
in every rustling leaf
his love moves through the world
like a steadfast oak
Adam's strength remains
like sunlight through the branches
his warmth still finds us
Adam loved the earth
and so the earth keeps him close
in wind
in woods
in quiet places
where the tall trees stand
and the wild places rest
there
Adam's spirit walks with ease
Adam has gone to the woods
but never from our hearts
A graveside service celebrating Adam's life will be held privately.
